Tasting Notes:

The 2019 Humis Vineyard Carménère has returned with another beautiful bright, purple/red colour with big, lifted varietal aromas complete with alluring violets and vanillian oak.

On the palate it has great dark fruits and plum and violet flavours, with an elegant, rich, smooth finish that is zingy and tight from the fine grained tannins.  It lingers for ages on the palate.

Cellaring:

This wine is drinking well now, however, it will over the next two to three years, mellow and mature more to become sensational.  It will then live for many more years if kept under good cellaring conditions.

  • The Carménère Story - Suspected to be lost to the wine drinking world since the dreaded Phylloxera plague in 1867.  This Bordeaux variety has been making a come back since being redicovered in Chile after being mistaken for Merlot.

In 2012, genetic analysis revealed Carménère to be the bastard son of Cabernet Franc and Gros Cabernet.

Carménère tends to be deep red in colour and sit somewhere between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in terms of structure.

Oh what a difference a year makes - the 2015 Carménère has a great length, full body and delicious wild berry flavours.

As the vines mature I have a feeling that is where we'll arrive with our Carménère as a style.
